Can a Stone be Conscious?
Back when I was a kid, whenever I threw stuff for fun, my mother used to stop me and warn me that those objects would complain to God about how I hurt them and then God would punish me. That made me wonder, can a non living thing really do that? Can they feel what is happening to them? Can they really talk? Even that to God? After a while I realised it was just a way to stop me from creating a mess and I stopped thinking about it. But recently I started wondering about it again. And my questions have slightly changed now, from whether a stone can think and talk to whether a stone can be conscious.
By consciousness here, I don't mean the response of external stimuli. I am talking about being conscious of self existence, or you can call it Self Awareness.
Let me express my notions on this topic.
Current worldview on this subject
If you do a simple google search about it, you will mainly find the answer that a non-living thing can't be conscious because it does not have a brain, it's not alive and so on.

Why I think this view and reasoning is wrong
If I show you a picture of an alien species and ask you DO YOU THINK IT CAN WALK? Then how would you respond to that? You might remind yourself that to be able to walk you need organs like legs and then look for something similar to legs in the alien's body, and then conclude your answer. You might guess correct or might not. Maybe the alien uses some entirely different method to walk. But this will be your method of knowing whether it can walk or not, won't it?

Now if I show you a stone and ask you whether it is conscious (self aware) or not, what will your method of checking this be? You might look in the stone for something similar to the THING which creates consciousness in us and all other beings. And here is the problem, we don't know (yet) what creates consciousness. You might say it's the brain that creates consciousness in us and thus looking for a brain in the stone will give us our answer. But it's not actually true. Years of research and experience suggests that consciousness is created in the brain but it does not specify HOW or WHERE in the brain is it created. Maybe a special pattern of atomic aggregation creates consciousness, which is present in our brain, but it is also possible for the same pattern to exist in a stone and since we don't look for that pattern as the sign of consciousness in the stone, we end up with the wrong conclusion. There are many theories as to what creates consciousness, some of which are very strange but also make sense.
The bottom line is we don't know what creates consciousness. And judging what HAS consciousness and what DOESN'T without the knowledge of what creates it is very absurd and naive. Maybe non-living things can also be conscious.
What would consciousness of a stone be like?
Even if a stone is conscious/self aware, it doesn't mean it will know what is happening around it or hear you or see you. It can't do all these since we know what is needed for seeing (eye), feeling physical stimuli (touch receptors), smell (olfactory receptor) and we know for sure that these are not present in a stone. So even if a stone does have consciousness, it's not in any way like ours. As far as I think, for a human it will be like floating in an infinite void space, without any light, any sound, any physical stimuli, just floating there forever with no linguistic thought. Just knowing that you EXIST and nothing else. Living in an infinite loneliness, FOREVER.

That's quite a strong opinion.
